Call for Submissions – ARLIS/ON Travel Award 2011

A travel award of $750 will be offered his year by the Ontario Chapter of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA). The award is intended to promote professional development among chapter members and to encourage their involvement in ARLIS/NA, by helping to defray the expense of attending ARLIS/NA’s annual conference. Held in Minneapolis Minnesota, March 24-18, 2011, this is second joint conference with the Visual Resources Association. For more information on the conference visit:

To apply for an award, please submit:

·      A letter of application indicating the conference for which you seek funding and addressing relevant eligibility and award criteria. The application should include brief descriptions of your professional interests, your expectations of the conference, and its relevance to your professional development.

·      An estimate of your conference expenses and amount of any institutional funding.

·      A one-page resume listing your employment history, educational background, and professional activities. Include your preferred mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address.

Nominations for ARLIS Ontario Executive

We are looking for members of ARLIS Ontario who would like to serve on the
2011 executive. We have openings for a membership coordinator, treasurer and
vice-chair. Please send an email indicating your interest in any of these
positions to Tammy Moorse (tmoorse AT gmail dot com) by November 11, 2010.

PLEASE NOTE: You do not have to be at the Fall meeting in Ottawa to be elected for these positions.

Please note: the vice-chair position is a three year commitment. In 2011, the position is vice-chair. In 2012, the position moves to chair of the executive and in 2013 the position becomes ex-officio.

Volunteers needed

In late February ARLIS Ontario will be hosting a panel discussion between professional artists and art librarians. We are looking for a couple of interested people who would like to help coordinate this event. Please contact Tammy Moorse, if you are interested.

Winter Fundraiser

Please join us December 9th for our winter social and fundraiser. This will be held at U of T. More details to come. We are looking for donations for the silent auction. Note From 2012 Conference Chairs

Hi Everyone,

The 40th annual ARLIS/NA conference in Toronto will be held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto from Thursday, March 29th to Monday, April 2, 2012. The conference planning team has secured rooms for sessions, workshops and meetings and a convocation and welcome party venue. Immediate next steps are to establish a Conference Theme and begin developing a promo presentation for the Minneapolis conference (March 24-28, 2011).

Thematic ideas were discussed at the first joint conference planning meeting of the Ontario and WNY chapters, held last April in Boston. The Program Co-Chairs would like to obtain the feedback of all Ontario and WNY chapter members on our proposed Conference Theme. The deadline for your response is Sunday, November 7th.

Ottawa – Fall Meeting

The Fall meeting of ARLIS Ontario will take place in Ottawa on Friday November 12  and Saturday November 13 at Carleton University.
This will be a joint meeting of the ARLIS Ontario chapter and the ARLIS Montreal/Ottawa/Quebec (MOQ) Chapter.

Meeting cost: $25 to ARLIS Ontario Members, $10 for students.

Meeting room at Carleton: MacOdrum Library, Room 102. (Directions: The room is in the basement of the library. If you enter through the front doors walk through the lobby to the double doors and proceed down the stairs. The room is slightly to the right at the bottom of the stairs.)

Parking at Carleton: There is not close free parking to campus. The lot that is closest to the library is lot 1 but it has a 4 hour limit and is rather expensive. The far lot is the best rate and no time limit for the day and is P6 (on the campus map) just as you come off Bronson turn right.

Friday – Start Time: 1:30 at Carleton University for ARLIS Ontario

  • 10:30 – 12 – ARLIS MOQ Business Meeting

Join us prior to 12:15 at the Baker’s Grille for their buffet lunch (cost $15 plus drink and gratuity)

  • 1:30 – Patti Harper – Archivist, Archives and Research Collection, Carelton University – will give a 40 minute presentation on the archives collection at the Carleton archives.
  • 2:45 – Dr. Norman Vorano – Curator of Contemporary Inuit Art, Canadian Museum of Civilization – will give a presentation on the recent acquisition of Inuit prints by the Museum.

7:30 pm –  dinner at Courtyard (in the Byward Market area)

Saturday – Start time 10:30 at Carleton University

  • 9 – 10:30 – 2012 Conference Planners meeting
  • 10:30 – 12 – ARLIS Ontario Business Meeting

The Royal Ontario Museum including the Main and Far Eastern Libraries. We are very pleased to be able to offer our membership a wonderful day at the spectacular and recently redesigned Royal Ontario Museum.

Our hosts will be Arthur Smith, Head, Main Library and Archives and
Jack Howard, Librarian, H.H. Mu Far Eastern Library.

Our ROM colleagues will lead us through a tour of both library facilities and regale us with some juicy details of their ordeal through the “Renaissance”.

After the tours, our visitors’ badges will permit our general release into the entire Museum to browse whichever displays strike our fancy.

We can have lunch at the Museum’s Food Studio which sources organic seasonal ingredients from local Ontario food producers.
